We had a “Bright Idea”!

Yesterday we had a visit from the Prize Patrol from Coastal Electric Membership Cooperative. Each year Coastal EMC provides teachers the opportunity to submit grants for classroom and school projects. We wrote a grant proposal to add new furnishings to our e-book reading lounge in the media center, and we were one of the selected recipients from Liberty, McIntosh, and Bryan counties. We can’t wait to post photos of our new items and this area once everything arrives.

Banned Books Week

Next week, October 1st-5th, is Banned Books Week. Libraries everywhere will celebrate the freedom to read with special displays, activities, and events. We will also be celebrating in our media center and can’t wait to host our major event of the week, the Banned Books Week Virtual Read-Out. Participants will select a banned or challenged book to read from for the project and all participants will be filmed for a video to be submitted to the American Library Association website. If we have enough student interest, we would also like to incorporate this project into a media festival submission. Don’t forget to watch for daily posts next week sharing some of the books that frequently make this list around the country. Start thinking now about some of your favorite banned or challenged books.  Let’s celebrate our freedom to read by pledging to read everyday next week!

Vote for Us!

We are continously looking for ways to improve the media center at Bradwell Institute. Our physical space has received a great deal of attention lately because it was definitely time for an update!

One resource that has helped us improve the media center’s physical appeal is Donors Choose. We have created two projects to add furniture and accessories to dress up our space. One project was funded and we received four leather reading chairs. Our other project is still pending though. We need a little over $300 in donations to get a new rug for our e-book reading area.

While donations to our project at www.donorschoose.org/melissa.mccallar would be appreciated, we need your help in another (less expensive) way. Sonic is partnering with Donors Choose in its program Limeades for Learning to fund projects like ours. All you have to do is vote each day, and the project with the most weekly votes will be completely funded by Sonic. This is a great way to support our program and school. All you need to vote is an e-mail address. You can find our project using this link to Mrs. M’s project. Thanks for your support!
